Despite the critics’ protest that mass production has diluted what was once maybe the best bargain in whiskey, Double Rye remains an excellent, affordable whiskey. In the glass, the whiskey exudes bright aromas of apple cider, mint, and of course, cinnamon and rye spice.
On the palate, a heavy dose of rye spice up front leads to a sweet finish with surprisingly little burn. The flavors are complex, the nose is fragrant, and it overall is just fantastic. It’s spicy on the first few sips, but it mellows out the more time you spend with it. If you can weather the initial spice storm, the whiskey becomes easier to drink and more enjoyable to taste.
