Writers’ Tears Cask Strength is a blend of single malt and pot still whiskey that is as rare as it is exceptional. This whiskey was created in 1999 by Bernard and Rosemary Walsh as part of an effort to resurrect traditional Irish whiskey recipes from the 19th Century, Ireland’s golden era of whiskey distilling. The name “Writers’ Tears” is a tribute to iconic writers and drinkers like Bram Stoker, Oscar Wilde, and W.B. Yeats, who were said to love whiskey so much that when they cried, their tears were of whiskey.
The Cask Strength offering takes all the best qualities of their base offering and delivers a hard yet smooth punch of caramel, baking spices, vanilla, chocolate, pear tart, and toasted oak. The aroma is bright and surprisingly mild at cask strength with notes of sweet oak, caramel candies, and vanilla fudge. The palate is creamy with cinnamon and coconut at the start, followed by chai tea and bitter butterscotch with cereal barley notes. Then the oak begins and continues, lasting until the finish.
Distiller: Walsh Whiskey, Carlow
Age: NAS (No Age Statement)
Strength: 109.6 proof
This whiskey is warm and full of baking spices1. It is mellow for a cask strength, let alone an Irish whiskey. The mouthfeel is velvety and the whiskey is more mellow. It is not hot at all, even with the 54.8% ABV. The whiskey is peppery and woody. A faint bit of sweetness comes from candied ginger. If you weren’t an Irish whiskey fan before, this will probably change your mind.
The price point for this premium Irish whiskey is $125. Given its limited availability and exceptional quality, it is worth every penny.
